Bohemian Rhapsody

As beautiful as Prague is during the day, with its collection of Neo-classical and Romanesque and Beaux Art structures crowded along narrow cobblestone alleys, it's at night when the city truly becomes magical.

Below is the Municipal Hall, known locally as the Smetana Hall (Art Nouveau style, for those counting), after the great Czech composer.

Tonight, as it so happened, there was a recital of a portion of Smetana's MaVlast (My Fatherland,) one of his greatest symphonic titles. (In a weird aside, I actually own the '89 recording by James Levine and the Vienna Philharmonic. It's quite beautiful, and portions of it very contemporary in a sense that fragments and refrains have the same rhythms as found in pop songs in the Bacharach & David or Lennon & McCartney tradition.
